Chinese Experimental Music by Alumni Composer and DJ/Pianist

Catch the live show with Ba Ban Chinese Music Society on March 29, Joe's Pub in NYC

University of Chicago alumni Juliane Jones, AB'05 (composer) and Rob Chan, AB'09 (DJ and pianist) join Ba Ban Chinese Music Society in an evening of Chinese experimental music.  Ba Ban features pipa virtuoso Zhou Yi, master flute player Miao Yimin, and the acclaimed Chinese opera singer Qian Yi.

The Chinese experimental live show integrates traditional Chinese music genres of guqin, pipa and xiao music, Chinese opera, and Buddhist chant into Western popular music idioms.  It pushes the boundaries of performance by blending languages, timbres, and concepts in a way that is conscious of the stakes of translation and appropriation.  Based on research begun at the University of Chicago and expanded during a Fulbright fellowship in China, Juliane and Ba Ban’s experimental live show, directed by Tony-nominated choreographer Robert Longbottom, is a celebration of cultural understanding.
